BBC Young Reporter: Raheem Sterling joins CBBC's Newsround team

The Manchester City and England footballer is joining the team to mentor young reporters.

He will also front special projects and lead masterclasses.

Raheem Sterling has joined the CBBC Newsround team as a reporter and mentor. The Manchester City and England footballer will also front special projects and lead masterclasses for young people interested in journalism.

Sterling, who has been capped 75 times by England, said he was "excited" to be joining the Newsround team.

"I've always been passionate about giving back to the community and inspiring young people, so this is a perfect opportunity for me to do both," he said.

Newsround editor Sarah Fowler said Sterling was a "brilliant role model" for young people.

"He's a passionate advocate for social justice and equality, and he's always willing to use his platform to make a difference," she said.

"We're really excited to have him on the team and we know he'll be a great inspiration to our young reporters."

Sterling's appointment comes at a time when the BBC is facing criticism for its lack of diversity. In 2020, the corporation was found to have just 13 black and minority ethnic (BAME) senior journalists out of a total of 130.

Sterling's appointment is a welcome step towards addressing this issue and will hopefully inspire more young people from diverse backgrounds to consider a career in journalism.
